Ashtanga yoga is a system of yoga transmitted to the modern world by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009). This method of yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive series of postures—a process producing intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind.
If you are new to the Ashtanga Yoga method, this class is a wonderful choice with which to begin. We progress through the primary series as traditionally taught, emphasizing breath, gaze, and posture, yet we conclude half way through the series with Navasana, and proceed from there to enter the closing postures.
By focusing on the first half of the series, you will gain a thorough understanding of the vinyasa yoga method, the alignment of the standing sequence, how to jump back and through with ease, as well as the keys to healthy forward bends, twists, and hip openers.
A perfect way to gain fluidity, strength, and ease within the Ashtanga yoga method, practicing the first half of the primary series will truly prime your body, mind, and spirit with a solid foundation upon which your yoga practice may then thrive.
